Yesterday Kai’s grandpa, Earl, came to Puddletown with his marvelous collection of rocks. He shared fossils, geodes, petrified wood, and more. We heard about where he and his family found some of the rocks and learned that the geode, also known as a thunder egg, is the Oregon state rock. At the end of his visit, he gave us 2 big bins of rocks to keep at Puddletown. Many hugs were exchanged. Thanks Earl!!

The children are excited for many of their parents to get together this weekend to support Puddletown at the second annual Puddletown Hall. They have been decorating coffee and flour bags, grinding wheat berries and coffee beans, and churning butter. Some children have been working on sewing projects and book making that they plan to donate to the fundraiser. We look forward to seeing many of you there!

Lavender 3/7/13 & 3/8/13

Juniper’s mom came to observe. Her name is Natalie. She watched us do our work and some of the children gave her art work to take home. Soon more parents will come to observe. It was so warm outside that many of us took our our jackets. We rehearsed a play based on the book Cat Flaps by Linley Dodd in the afternoon. A hula hoop was the cat flap. We will perform the play for the Cedar classroom next week.

We celebrated Bianca’s birthday. Her mom and brother came to the celebration. We rehearsed our play. We played the silence game. At lunch we said our poem “Thank you” by Margaret Wise Brown. A lot of children were excited about the work they were doing. Joe was the escort this week and really liked bringing the half day children to their families when they were ready to go home.

Cedar 3/5/13 & 3/7/13

Weylin came back to school. He was at home sick yesterday but today he is feeling better. We read a book about the animals on Buttercup Farm and then we sang Old McDonald. Two children did a collective subtraction together without the teacher. Lots of words were built with the moveable alphabet: fruits, things you see in the sky, and furry animals. It rained while we were playing on the playground. In extended day we read another chapter from the book Little House on the Prairie. There were wolves outside the house and Pa and Laura built a new door.

Many children were busy working on projects. One person made many flower arrangements and placed them around the classroom and another child got a lesson on cloth washing and washed all of the dirty cloths in our laundry basket. We found a spider and caught it with the bug catcher. We looked at the spider through a magnifying glass. Jaasi put the spider outside when we were all done.

Sage 3/7/13 & 3/8/13

Frankie’s dad came to observe. We listened to “Mango Fandango” during lunch. Florence made some coconut bread at home and brought it in to share with the extended day. She made the dough and it had to sit overnight. It was delicious. Some children played soccer outside. They set up the goals and had a coach. Netti made a teeter totter and gave children a turn to ride it with her.

Amy and Amelia M. made pizza dough in early care and Ellie and Amelia M. made pizza during the morning. Henry and Gus worked really hard sweeping bark chips out of the playhouse. Some other children helped too. We played the muffin man game. In the game someone closes their eyes and listens to everyone sing. Then only one person sings and the person with their eyes closed tries to guess who’s singing. Felix and Amelia R. were absent and we missed them.

In the cedar class today was different because Sam came to our classroom. Weylin stayed home today. We went on a walk up stairs and got to see the church. We also went on a walk around the block on our way to the playground. Some people in our classroom did math work, washed a table, built with blocks and drew with the metal insets. We made a song about knees, hands and noses.

In the lavender class today we learned about one of the largest beetles- the dung beetle. It came in the mail all the way from South Africa. We had pizza today. Outside was so hot we took our jackets off.

In the sage class today we watched a huge snail. There were lots of words being made with the moveable alphabet. We got to work with a hand cranked paper shredder. Don’t forget to say it was pizza day.

In the Sage Class we had a “Mango Fandango Fruit Salad” with our lunch. We played relay races outside. It was raining for half the time and then it stopped. We are listening to Bach when the nappers are going to sleep. We are going to make pizza dough this afternoon so we can make pizza tomorrow. We read the chapter where Ramona said a bad word and the bad work was “guts”. We are on chapter 9. Caitlyn is going to read some of chapter 9.

In the Lavender class yesterday we talked about the layers of the earth’s crust and magma. We practiced our earthquake drill game. Today we learned about a group of mammals called marsupials. Some people though the wombats were “kangaroo pigs.” Some of the 3rd year children played subtraction with the golden beads. We learned a little bit about Sergei Prokofiev the composer of Peter and the Wolf. He used to listen to his mother play the piano and fell in love with music that way.

In the Cedar class today three children did an addition problem. They added 1,985, 2,857 and 3,968 all together. Some children helped Jassi set up for lunch. We played outside and it was wet and fun. We collected water with buckets and cleaned out the wagon. Some of us rode in the cart today.

It was sunny outside and a lot of children were climbing on the geodesic dome. Emily gave a group lesson wearing a blindfold with the thermic tablets. She used her wrist to tell the different temperatures of each piece and match them. Konner made tea for Andrea and brought it to the office.

Today is Monday, February 25, 2013

It hailed at playtime. When it fell down on us it kind of hurt; it was very cold. We got to eat some hail out of the wagon, the big wagon! We made a waterfall outside by filling a giant bucket and pouring water down the hill.

We got to sing “Mango Fandango” and Amy brought all the fruits in the song except cherries and qunice. We had mango, papaya, blueberries, coconut, raspberries, banana, oranges, lemon, and kiwi. We are going to turn all the fruits into a fruit salad to eat on Thursday.

In extended day we are reading and listening to Bach. We are reading Ramona the Brave by Beverly Cleary.

There were two observers today: Alec’s mom and Eme’s grandma. Alec’s mom is called Callie and Eme’s grandma is called Ann.

We have welcomed 2 new students to our community this January. Each time new children join us, there is a great sense of excitement. The current children get a chance to talk about and practice what they know about being a helper and active part of the classroom. Today as our newest student, Lena, found her way, she had so many eager “experts” to show her where to get a drink of water, what to do if you want snack, how to return something to the shelf, and on and on.

When the children came outside, we talked about bouncing a little softer on the suspension bridges while Lena got used to them. All of the children immediately and joyfully complied. Many offered a helping hand as Lena fearlessly put one foot in front of the other.

Welcome Lena and Sophia! We’re happy you’re here!
